What Will the Neighbors Say?

It is amazing some of the things white people say when they see an asian "girl" with a white man. Their response shows just how deep our racial stereotypes go.

Things White People Say

1. "She must be a wildcat in bed!"

This perception of the asian woman as a sex toy probably comes from G.I. Joes who see nothing but prostitutes and women in desparate conditions when they travel overseas. In fact, some asian women are sexually active, many are not. Just like caucasian women, it depends on the person.

2. "Oh, isn't she the most sweet and innocent little doll!"

Movies, plays, and books perpetuate this image of asian women. Many asian women play this role, and play it well, but many do not. Asian women, like anyone else can be career driven, independant, and even downright aggressive.

3. "He must like those submissive types."

This is a cut on both the white man and the asian woman. The thinking is (ussually started by a white woman) that the man wants to go back to an era where he is boss. It implies that asian women are all a bunch of submissive slaves. Asian women and white men have complex relationships, depending on their cultural background. She may have chosen him because he is an east coast liberal who recognizes women's equality. Sometimes the white man is the leader, but I haven't known many asian women who don't get thier way. The point is that the couple is happy...Isn't that what matters?

4. "He must have some kind of weird fetish."

When a white man dates only white women he is never accused of having a fetish. Men may find blondes attractive, or women who are petite, or older women, or....

well, you get the idea.

Some men have an attraction to asian QUALITIES.

Less healthy men have a fetish for asian women as OBJECTS. If you think you have a problem, ask yourself "Is she an object or a person?"

If you have ever crossed the racial divide, you have met the awkward pause. This is not as bad as some of the others. Some people have never met an asian before, they just don't know how to act.

Things they say about the Asian Girl

I will wait on some commentary, since a lot of times I don't here what the asians say about the women I date. Here are a few that have worked their way back through the grapevine.

1. "Asian girls that date white men are ugly by our standards."

an Asian woman once told me this. Ironicly she was very beautiful by any countries standards, and was dating a white man (in secret).

2. "She's sleeping her way to a Green Card"

I had a girlfriend that cried for hours when she heard someone lableled her a green card seeker. No doubt some women have used white men as their ticket to america; to imply that every Asian women is a prostitute for the price of papers is demeaning to the couple.

3. "He is dumb"

A white friend of mine with a 4.0 GPA was studying with his Korean girlfriend (GPA 3.1) when one of her friends dropped by; in the course of conversation she made a comment that it was good of her "to be helping him with his chemistry." In fact, the situation was reversed. One note: as a couple these two had excellent chemistry.

The awkward silence is ever present in both cultures.
